Through these letters of credit, developers can avoid tying up vital cash upfront when utilities demand massive fees for grid upgrades. For example, Switch recently secured a 3.5 billion dollar commitment from multiple banks, which not only provides financial security at a low cost of around two percent but also helps utilities filter out speculative projects lacking actual financial backing. This effectively acts as an alternative credit rating, allowing well-funded developers to stand out while waiting in line for grid connections.

However, this trend also brings potential risks to Wall Street banks, as large artificial intelligence companies are simultaneously facing massive and unmonetized spending pressures.

Although letters of credit are typically tied to multiple projects to reduce the probability of a total default, some banks agree to provide guarantees before developers have signed leases or secured project financing, leading institutions like Morgan Stanley to adopt a cautious approach.
