According to an online survey of 3,000 US adults, nearly half of millennials believe their current financial situation is better than it was five years ago. Despite facing the Great Recession when entering the workforce, followed by the pandemic and high inflation, Federal Reserve data shows millennials are rapidly catching up to older generations in wealth accumulation. Since early 2021, their net worth has surged by 134 percent to reach 19.12 trillion dollars.

The wealth growth of millennials is partly driven by a strong stock market performance, with the value of their corporate equities and mutual fund holdings more than doubling since 2021. Additionally, while their homeownership rate still lags behind baby boomers and Gen Xers, the gap is closing, as their share of US real estate wealth has risen from roughly 14 percent to 22 percent. This may suggest they are late bloomers, as their real median household incomes at the same age bracket have surpassed previous generations.

However, millennials have also seen their consumer debt grow at a much faster pace than other generations, climbing 46 percent since the first quarter of 2021. Even with debt pressures and delayed life milestones like buying a home or having children, many remain optimistic about their situation. Financial experts note that this sense of financial security stems not just from asset sizes, but from their control over career choices and confidence in their future income growth potential.
