The UK economy is currently experiencing a K-shaped recovery with data pointing in completely different directions. On one hand, economic growth, business investment, and overall wages are higher than expected, showing strong performance at the top end; on the other hand, private-sector wage growth has slowed, job vacancies have decreased, and unemployment has risen, indicating that the bottom end of the labor market is struggling.
Although recent studies highlight a significant increase in UK labor productivity, this is accompanied by a decline in actual employment numbers, meaning fewer people are doing more work. The development of artificial intelligence has exacerbated this trend, particularly in easily replaceable entry-level roles where businesses reduce hiring due to uncertainty, and the job market is flooded with AI-generated resumes, making the job-hunting process exceptionally difficult.
Faced with this structural shift, the current policy responses from the UK's major political parties appear out of touch and fail to effectively address the paralysis at the bottom of the labor market. Policymakers must adopt more flexible regulations and combine housing reform with support for small businesses in experimental hiring to help young people and workers affected by AI share in the benefits of productivity growth.
