These data centers are not only expensive to build and operate, but their outdoor cooling systems, solar arrays, and power facilities are highly vulnerable to extreme weather, posing significant underwriting challenges for insurers. For example, Nvidia and OpenAI's recent hundred-billion-dollar data center project in Ohio is located near an area recently hit by severe storms and hail.
Although storm-related claims for data centers have been relatively limited so far, experts warn that as new hyperscale facilities grow in size and are often built in high-risk zones, even partial damage or prolonged operational interruptions could eventually trigger massive insurance claims amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.
