iFixit has disassembled the newly released iPhone 18 Pro and awarded it a repairability score of 7 out of 10, matching the rating received by the previous iPhone 17 Pro. The teardown highlighted that the camera assembly and battery are relatively straightforward to remove, showing tangible improvements in reparability following years of advocacy and European regulatory pressure.
However, the newly introduced variable aperture lens in the 48-megapixel camera presents a significant repair challenge due to its intricate moving parts, including six rotating blades as thin as a human hair. Because repairing individual blades is nearly impossible, any failure will likely necessitate replacing the entire camera module, noticeably increasing repair expenses despite the module itself being accessible. Regarding battery replacement, opening the phone still involves prying off the glued-on screen, but the battery is now secured by screws instead of adhesive, making extraction much simpler. Although Apple has expanded its self-repair initiatives and diagnostic tools under regulatory scrutiny, consumer advocacy groups continue to push for greater overall ease of repair.
