Rabbit gained widespread attention at CES 2024 with its dedicated AI hardware, the R1, but faced harsh reviews due to underperforming agentic features. Despite this, CEO Jesse Lyu stated that the R1 was commercially successful, shipping over 100,000 units with a return rate under 5% and hardware margins around 45% to 50%. Although the company navigated financial strains and internal labor challenges, Rabbit maintained a lean team and deployed dozens of software updates to improve the device's openness and versatility.
As the AI agent landscape matured, Rabbit announced a major pivot by introducing OS3, a cross-platform agentic operating system, transitioning its focus from standalone handhelds to existing multi-screen setups. Rabbit has ceased production of the R1 and has no plans for an R2, instead positioning the original gadget as an input/output accessory for OS3 while preparing to launch a specialized Cyberdeck machine for vibe coding in the coming months.
Operating through a cloud platform linked to local desktop nodes on Windows, Mac, and Linux, OS3 coordinates cross-device tasks, manages local files, and autonomously writes and debugs code via Rabbit's DLAM technology. Featuring a continuous stream interface and a Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) model with no monthly subscription fee, OS3 allows users to connect models from OpenAI, Anthropic, or local open-source options while keeping file contents securely on their local machines.
