The US 30-year Treasury yield has stayed above 5% for 27 trading days in 2026, including 12 consecutive sessions, marking the longest stretch since 2007. Notably, the Federal Reserve's benchmark rate is currently 150 basis points lower than in 2007, indicating that investors are demanding significantly greater compensation for holding long-duration government debt amid concerns over rising national debt and persistent inflation.

The sustained climb in long-dated yields reflects deepening anxiety over America's deteriorating fiscal outlook. The Treasury market has swelled to $31 trillion from $4.5 trillion since 2007, with debt-to-GDP surpassing 100% and annual interest costs exceeding $1 trillion. Compounding the pressure, over $500 billion in corporate financing tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure is competing for the same pool of long-end debt buyers, drawing parallels to the 1980s-era bond vigilantes who punished fiscal excess by driving yields higher.

Leading investors believe yields above 5% may be structural rather than transient. Hoisington Investment Management, a decades-long bond bull, recently capitulated, citing larger fiscal deficits and higher capital demand. Vanguard's senior portfolio manager noted that traditional long-bond buyers such as pensions and insurers now have a wider menu of alternatives. Bloomberg strategists suggest that 5% is becoming a floor rather than a ceiling for the 30-year yield, with 5.5% as the next likely target, while money managers increasingly favor shorter maturities to limit exposure to a potential debt-induced selloff.
