Global birth rates are declining steeply, with more than two-thirds of nations now falling below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman, setting global population on course for an unprecedented drop. Beyond conventional drivers such as delayed relationships, housing costs, and financial insecurity, an increasingly hostile cultural environment toward parenting has made larger families feel alienated, accelerating demographic shrinkage and threatening to strain welfare systems and economies.

A powerful form of social contagion and network effects plays a decisive role in the declining birth rate, as human reproductive choices are deeply shaped by peer behaviors and cultural norms. The prevalence of digital media highlighting the hardships of pregnancy alongside glorifications of single life has reinforced childlessness as the default norm. This dynamic exemplifies the low-fertility trap, where shrinking generations lose social learning and make reversing the decline increasingly difficult.

While immigration is often expected to offset demographic deficits, newcomers rapidly assimilate into host countries' smaller family norms. Nonetheless, network effects can be leveraged positively to reverse this trend: corporate initiatives by TSMC and LOTTE offering on-site childcare and compulsory parental leave, along with community-centered support in Japan's Nagi town, demonstrate that making children visible, desirable, and supported can successfully revive birth rates.
