Following the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and a series of devastating earthquakes, independent oil prospectors known as wildcatters, including Greig Gilbert who fled the country decades ago, are seizing the opportunity to return and invest in Venezuela. Despite massive challenges including $6.7 billion in direct economic damages, a buckling power grid, rampant theft, and severely deteriorated infrastructure, these independent operators are willing to gamble on risks that major corporations avoid in hopes of securing major early returns.
While oil supermajors like Chevron, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips remain on the sidelines due to political uncertainty, tax rates, and unresolved historical debts, independent wildcatters and wealthy investors such as Harold Hamm, Jeff Hildebrand, and Alvorada Heavy Industries are eager to move in. These prospectors enjoy the support of US President Donald Trump, who praised their enthusiasm in meetings following Maduro's capture, and several key players maintain deep ties with senior officials from both the US and Venezuela.
Despite thousands of pipeline leaks in Lake Maracaibo and dilapidated equipment, Venezuela's oil output has already increased by 20% since Maduro's arrest, delivering around 500,000 barrels a day of easily processed crude to the US Gulf Coast. Wildcatters remain confident that by replacing basic parts like compressors, pumps, and valves, targeted fields can be restored to capacity within three to four years, betting heavily on the vast potential of untapped reservoirs like the La Luna formation.
