Chinese automakers are leveraging artificial intelligence to compress new vehicle development cycles to just 18 months, outpacing legacy foreign competitors that take three to five years. However, this breakneck speed has raised significant concerns regarding safety and testing, triggering industry debates over whether compressed timelines risk damaging brand reputation.

In response, Chinese regulators have launched a yearlong campaign featuring surprise inspections and stricter regulations targeting batteries, advanced driver-assistance systems, and door handles. Authorities are also proposing to double the mandatory road testing for new-energy vehicles to 30,000 kilometers to ensure safety standards and maintain consumer trust.

While higher compliance costs pose challenges for smaller players and executives note that slowing down is difficult amid fierce market competition, adopting AI for digital validation has set a new benchmark. Legacy foreign automakers like Volkswagen are accelerating their own development in China, though essential physical road testing baselines remain indispensable.
