New York City has seen a 22 percent drop in reported rat sightings during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, marking the lowest levels since the pandemic. This significant improvement is largely credited to former Mayor Eric Adams, who launched a war on rats in 2022 that focused on cutting off the rodents' food supply through strict trash containerization rules.

To further address the issue, the city piloted the installation of large on-street trash receptacles known as Empire Bins in certain neighborhoods, where residents have reported cleaner streets and a noticeable decrease in rat activity. Current Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pledged to continue these efforts, with the goal of achieving 100 percent citywide trash containerization by the end of 2031.

Although the citywide data shows a downward trend, some specific areas like Manhattan Community Board 3 experienced a 38 percent increase in rat sightings. Local residents attribute this spike to frequent construction work and food waste from first-floor restaurants, whereas city officials consider it a statistical anomaly caused by localized issues within individual buildings.
