Josh Miller, CEO of The Browser Company, sparked widespread discussion by pointing out that despite Silicon Valley's obsession with AI agents, virtually no one outside the tech community uses them. While chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini boast roughly a billion monthly active users each, AI agents such as OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code collectively reach only about 10 million weekly users—a rounding error by comparison—highlighting a significant adoption gap that threatens the AI labs' return on their massive investments.

Miller argues that AI agents are fundamentally a technology rather than a standalone product, and that the industry errs by marketing them as such. He points to his own company's most popular feature—a personalized morning briefing in the Dia browser that aggregates calendars, emails, and curated content—as proof that agent-powered experiences succeed when they are framed around user needs like calm, focus, and joy, rather than around the underlying technical architecture.

Miller also criticizes groupthink in the AI industry, noting that nearly every lab leader he met referenced the movie Her as their product vision, revealing a troubling lack of diverse perspectives. He urges founders and builders to move beyond the prevailing AI-agent narrative and instead create products that are joyful, useful, and approachable, arguing that mainstream adoption will only come when the technology disappears into genuinely compelling consumer experiences rather than being showcased as impressive but impractical demos.
