Following the release of Moonshot's Kimi K3 model, Washington reacted with panic, threatening sanctions and making accusations of intellectual property theft. However, Silicon Valley responded differently, with many tech companies and founders arguing that open models are essential for maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence and warning that the country is falling behind.

Tech giants including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, along with numerous startups, signed letters opposing the ban on foreign models and defending techniques like model distillation as legitimate development practices. The industry pointed out that open distribution is now a competitive strategy, and the widespread adoption of open models will benefit American companies providing cloud services and hardware infrastructure.

The author argues that a reflexive crackdown by Washington would backfire, as it would not stop global developers from using these models while putting American researchers at a disadvantage. Conversely, if this panic forces the US to build a competitive open ecosystem, it could strengthen American AI capabilities far more than any attempts at suppression.
