Effective altruism (EA), conceived by Oxford philosophers, has surged from an academic theory into the corridors of technological and political power. It has captivated a generation of young elites enriched by cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence, underpinning leading frontier labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. Convinced that those aware of catastrophic existential risks must oversee frontier models, adherents advocate decelerating development to prevent misaligned superintelligence from destroying humanity, a fear underscored by OpenAI shelving its latest model over acute safety hazards. However, this agenda has provoked fierce resistance from the Trump administration and the Pentagon, which denounce EA as a dystopian impediment to national technological supremacy amid clashes with Anthropic over military deployments.
At its theoretical core, EA reduces ethical conduct to utilitarian mathematical optimisation, seeking to maximise global welfare across time and geography while discounting traditional moral obligations like familial loyalty or personal promises. This framework initially channelled ambitious graduates into high-paying corporate roles to finance evidence-based charitable interventions. Gradually, however, the doctrine radicalised into fringe causes, including anti-factory farming advocacy for shrimp, alongside a fervent embrace of "longtermism." Longtermist calculations assign equal moral standing to trillions of unborn future humans, prioritizing distant existential mitigation over immediate human suffering and diverting philanthropic resources away from acute global poverty toward speculative future populations or potential machine consciousness.
While empiricism and disciplined debate remain commendable virtues, relying on spreadsheet arithmetic that incorporates trillions of hypothetical beings, variable discount rates, and erratic future technological trends introduces compounding mathematical error. Pushed to its logical extremes, this crude utilitarianism risks eroding individual human dignity, evoking historical instances where technocratic elites rationalised coercion under the pretext of universal enlightenment. The profound irony of effective altruism is that while its disciples rightfully warn that unconstrained artificial intelligence might optimise relentlessly toward a singular catastrophic objective, the movement’s influential Silicon Valley vanguard risks succumbing to the exact same cognitive trap by concentrating absolute technological authority within their self-selected circle.
