Donald Trump maintains that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un faces no peril while he holds office, yet strategic analysts view Pyongyang’s escalating arsenal with acute dread. North Korea commands an operational stockpile of between 57 and 120 nuclear warheads, bolstered by annual fissile material output sufficient for ten to 20 additional bombs alongside ballistic systems threatening both South Korea and the Western hemisphere. Three decades of non-proliferation diplomacy have comprehensively failed; moreover, American military strikes against non-nuclear Iran reinforce Kim's conviction that atomic warheads offer the only shield against regime collapse, rendering Washington's dogmatic policy of unconditional, complete denuclearisation virtually obsolete.
Despite three barren summit meetings during his first term, Mr Trump is actively contemplating another encounter with his self-styled friend, potentially leveraging the Asia-Pacific summit in China on November 18th or even staging an unprecedented presidential trip to Pyongyang. In response, Kim demands formal American acknowledgement of North Korea’s sovereign nuclear status as a non-negotiable prerequisite. South Korea’s president, Lee Jae Myung, advocates a pragmatic "peace first" doctrine that shelves denuclearisation to secure incremental confidence-building gestures—such as border de-escalation, direct military hotlines, and curbing Pyongyang’s transfer of missiles and combat personnel to Russia. Nonetheless, formally legitimising North Korea would fatally subvert the global Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, establishing a devastating precedent for rogue proliferation.
The paramount strategic hazards reside in Kim’s entrenched bad faith and Mr Trump’s volatile, superficial approach to statecraft. Domestic totalitarian control compels the Kim dynasty to perpetuate hostility toward the United States to justify internal subjugation, ensuring any formal disarmament treaty will be violated whenever convenient. Furthermore, arms-control protocols demand immense technical rigor and meticulous verification parameters that Mr Trump notoriously discounts. In an unstructured negotiating room, an unprepared American president could easily be swayed by flattery, dangerously trading away American troop deployments that have guaranteed South Korean deterrence since 1953 in exchange for meaningless optical concessions.
