The James Webb Space Telescope has released a stunning panoramic view of the nearby star-forming region IC 348, marking one of its largest images made public to date. By probing the region with Webb's highly sensitive infrared instruments, astronomers uncovered brown dwarfs with masses just twice that of Jupiter (about 0.19% of the Sun's mass), setting a record for the lowest-mass brown dwarfs known and challenging current theoretical models of star formation.

Beyond finding these record-setting lightweight brown dwarfs, the Webb observations revealed additional surprises: one of the least massive brown dwarfs displays evidence of a circumstellar disc, indicating that planets might form around an object that itself has planetary mass; furthermore, spectroscopy identified unique hydrocarbon signatures in the atmospheres of these lowest-mass objects, suggesting they may represent an entirely separate spectral class.

Complementing the central cluster of young stars and brown dwarfs, the upper-right area of the panorama features an intricate collection of protostars and associated Herbig-Haro objects. Notably, this includes HH 797, revealed to be two protostars with parallel outflows, and the propeller-shaped HH 211, both illustrating the dramatic and energetic outflows generated as newborn stars interact with their surrounding molecular clouds.
