The South Korean government is considering the creation of an investment fund funded by excess tax revenue from the semiconductor industry to finance long-term economic growth. Driven by forecasted record operating profits of chip giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the two companies are expected to generate over 100 trillion won ($65 billion) in annual corporate taxes.

Kang Hoon-sik, chief of staff to President Lee Jae Myung, stated that the fund would be used for bold investments, including supporting the country's recently unveiled "three mega projects" (focusing on semiconductors, physical AI, and data centers), addressing K-shaped economic polarization, and supporting housing, startups, and jobs for young people. Part of the tax windfall may also fund infrastructure like electricity and water supplies for chip plants.

As the AI boom continues to enrich local chipmakers, discussions on how to utilize and redistribute these gains are intensifying in South Korea. The president's policy chief, Kim Yong-beom, previously suggested paying citizens a "dividend" from excess AI profits, underscoring the growing pressure to share the benefits of the technological boom.
