In late October President Trump brokered the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, claiming it would save “millions of lives,” after Cambodia and Thailand had already fought for five days in July in disputed borderlands. Those July clashes killed several dozen people and displaced about 300,000 civilians, highlighting the high human cost concentrated in less than a week of combat.

The ceasefire collapsed on December 8th when Thailand launched F‑16 air strikes, and by December 10th renewed battles along the border had killed at least 19 people and injured more than 100. The new fighting has again pushed hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, mirroring the earlier wave of roughly 300,000 refugees within just months.

Mutual accusations over freshly laid landmines, a border dispute that has smouldered for generations, and Thailand’s far stronger army all fuel escalation despite Mr Trump’s tariff threats and boasts of peace. With Thai generals backing Prime Minister Anutin ahead of an expected 2026 election, some leaders may see crippling Cambodia’s military capability as a politically rewarding long‑term objective rather than a short‑term deterrent.
