Australia’s Senate was suspended for 90 minutes after Pauline Hanson entered wearing a burqa, her second such stunt in a decade; it ended with a one-week suspension and criticism that only a tiny number of Muslim women wear a full veil.

Founded in 1997, One Nation is rising from about 1 in 20 support in June to almost 1 in 6 in some polls, driven by high living costs, immigration anxiety, and the centre-right coalition shedding conservative voters to it. On December 8, former deputy prime minister and ex-Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce confirmed his defection and plans to run for a Senate seat in the 2028 election, likely boosting fundraising and reach into rural New South Wales.

Against hard-right rallies growing in recent months, official responses have been numerically blunt and reactive: Victoria banned the fascist salute in 2023, and a group planning to register a “White Australia Party” faces no rule-based barrier and could gain media coverage despite low odds of winning seats. With 1 in 3 residents born overseas, preferential voting may block One Nation from governing even if support keeps climbing, yet Australia’s spy chief says most terror threats investigated last year involved racist or nationalist ideologies, pointing to a higher risk of violence alongside the polling surge.
