Singapore will launch a landmark coastal protection project by the end of this year, aiming to reclaim up to 800 hectares of land to protect against rising sea levels. The "Long Island" project will feature a reservoir, new islands, outlet drains, pumping stations, and tidal gates to safeguard low-lying coastal areas.

The project is part of a $100 billion strategy to build resilience against climate impacts, as about 30% of the nation's land is less than five meters above mean sea level, including residential areas, businesses, and Changi Airport. Technical studies began in 2023, and a coastal protection bill was passed recently to mandate physical safeguards.

The first phase of construction will commence west of Bedok Jetty off East Coast Park, with the second phase starting after the 2029 Southeast Asian Games. While the works will temporarily displace some recreational activities and have minor environmental impacts, the project could eventually add about 20 kilometers of new waterfront parks.
