On Monday, Meta Platforms Inc. announced it had signed a deal for up to 1 GW of space-derived solar energy from Overview Energy, a startup building satellites to harvest sunlight and convert it into grid-ready electricity. The company said a gigawatt is roughly equivalent to the output of one nuclear reactor. The arrangement gives Meta preferential access to Overview’s future capacity, but Meta did not disclose commercial terms. Overview’s orbital power-plant model remains conceptual, with an initial orbital demonstration targeted for 2028 and expected commercial power delivery in 2030.

Meta framed the agreement as part of a much larger AI power strategy. The company is committing hundreds of billions of dollars to secure energy, infrastructure, and computing capacity for AI. In a statement, Nat Sahlstrom, Meta’s vice president of energy and sustainability, said the company expects clean, uninterrupted energy from Overview. Even with this interest in space solar, Meta currently relies heavily on natural gas because it is seen as more stable than some cleaner alternatives.

Meta is also funding 10 new gas-fired plants for its largest AI data center campus in rural Louisiana. Meta is not alone in looking to space for scale: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and other executives have discussed placing computing facilities in orbit. Overview Energy, based in northern Virginia, argues that continuous sunlight in space could avoid major limits of ground solar. If continuous collection and beaming to Earth receivers works as intended, it could offer cleaner energy than weather-, daylight-, and season-dependent terrestrial photovoltaics.
