Nvidia is both an investor in and a core user of Cursor. Jensen Huang has repeatedly presented it as evidence that AI is already delivering gains in software development, but the strategic context is shifting: SpaceX, which now owns xAI, has offered the right to acquire Cursor later this year for $60 billion, or pay $10 billion to continue working together, effectively a break-up fee. This creates a capital-structure risk for a company that is still growing strongly and deeply embedded inside Nvidia.
Cursor’s major strength is that users can switch between multiple models in one interface, including OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude, depending on the task, which has made it unusually sticky. If ownership moves to Elon Musk, even without product changes, companies may hesitate to rely on it for critical workflows because it would be controlled by a direct competitor. At the same time, Sam Altman’s recent email exchange with Jensen Huang showed OpenAI’s Codex being rolled out across Nvidia, with a directive to “fire up those Blackwells,” indicating enterprise-wide scaling.
While Cursor’s ownership remains in flux, Nvidia is expanding Codex internally, yet many engineers still prefer Cursor, with few seeing the same model flexibility if Codex stays tightly coupled to OpenAI models. The wider trend is that models are improving quickly and gaps are narrowing, so competitive advantage is shifting toward interface, tooling, and workflow, and both OpenAI and Elon Musk are now accelerating in this area. Nvidia has so far balanced all sides because SpaceX-linked entities remain major chip customers, Cursor is a key internal productivity layer, and OpenAI is increasingly embedded; if Cursor ends up inside SpaceX, that balance becomes much harder to sustain.
