At a funeral in Kharliakh, Igor Ivanov’s coffin returned from 4,500 km away in Ukraine; he had enlisted to earn enough for a flat for his children, fought only a few months, went missing, and after his body was found, his son who went to search for him also went missing in action. The red-and-black funeral symbolism compresses this family’s consecutive war losses into a clear case of demographic cost.

Yakutia is larger than Argentina but has only 1 million people (half Yakut), with temperatures ranging from -60°C in winter to 40°C in summer; Mediazona reports more than 2,500 war dead from the region, exceeding St Petersburg despite that city having five times the population. On a per-capita basis, this implies Yakutia’s death burden is at least 5x higher, indicating a sharply uneven regional concentration of casualties.

Although Yakutia produces a quarter of the world’s diamonds and peaked in film and tech growth in the 2010s, the war period shows measurable decline and social restructuring: about 400 women protesting mobilization in 2022 were quickly dispersed, Oleneksk lost a quarter of its herds in 2024 after migration monitoring was cut, and a teenager was killed in January at a military exhibit. Running alongside these losses are trends of consumption substitution, depoliticized local media, normalized military recruitment imagery, and partial return migration under pressure.
