Australia has emerged as a startup outlier despite distance and a small population of 28 million. Last year Australian startups raised over $5bn in venture capital, the third-best year on record behind the 2021–22 boom, up nearly 50% since 2018, and only slightly behind France and Germany. Since 2000, Australia has produced 1.22 unicorns per $1bn of VC investment, the highest ratio in the world and almost twice the U.S. rate.

This momentum traces to a lineage effect from earlier winners: Atlassian, launched in 2002 without VC, listed on Nasdaq in 2015 and remains worth about $16bn despite a 70% drop in share price last year; Afterpay was sold to U.S. payment firm Block for $29bn in 2022; and Canva was valued at $42bn in August with a likely IPO in one to two years. Their success spawned follow-on founders, such as Dovetail, while Australia also has seven of the world’s top 100 universities for computer science and a strengthening boomerang flow of talent returning from Silicon Valley, matching high AI adoption with per-capita Claude use ranked third globally.

The ecosystem remains relatively small and concentrated. Two-thirds of VC deals involved foreign investors, and just 20 deals accounted for 58% of funding last year, while superannuation funds managing about $3.2trn follow conservative rules that limit early-stage risk appetite. Recent layoffs suggest a tightening cycle: Atlassian cut 1,600 jobs (about 10%, including roughly 480 in Australia), and Sydney logged among the highest tech layoffs outside America in 2026, with pandemic-era over-hiring widely seen as the more likely cause than AI efficiency gains alone.
