Since the Supreme Court struck down a federal ban in 2018, 39 states have legalised sports betting, rapidly normalising wagering among students on campuses saturated with games and promotions. A 2023 NCAA survey found that 60% of college students had gambled on sport, with on-campus residents betting at even higher rates.
The same NCAA data show that 16% of 18- to 22-year-olds already meet criteria for problematic sports gambling, while a Siena poll reports that one quarter of male sports bettors have had friends or family voice concern. Among 18- to 34-year-old men using betting apps, 28% say they have struggled to meet a financial obligation after a lost wager, and clinicians at large schools such as Penn State (64,000 undergraduates) now routinely see young men who have lost sums big enough to affect basic needs.
Financial and psychological risks are compounded by threats to game integrity and athlete welfare: the NCAA logged 740 cases of harassment of student-athletes linked directly to betting in one year and uncovered three recent point-shaving scandals in men’s basketball. Despite universities unwinding some sponsorship deals and the NCAA lobbying to curb prop bets on individual players, wagers on March Madness still exceed those on the Super Bowl by more than two to one, and heavily exposed young men continue to chase multi-leg parlays and daily action.
