In Ituri, eastern Congo, the worst Ebola outbreak since 2018 is accelerating amid violence and a weak response: on May 24th, young men attacked Mongbwalu hospital four times to retrieve the corpse of a preacher who probably died of Ebola, after arsonists burned an isolation tent the night before and warning shots sent dozens of patients fleeing in chaos.
By May 28th, Congo had more than 1,000 suspected cases and about 250 suspected deaths, with true totals likely higher; Uganda has confirmed seven cases and one death, South Sudan is at risk, and around one-third of surveyed Ituri residents doubt Ebola is real while almost 1m people live in refugee camps. With no rapid tests or licensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, staff untrained to handle Ebola patients safely, and even petrol scarce, the response is lagging behind the epidemic.
Controlling Ebola requires community monitoring, laboratory confirmation, isolation and management, and contact tracing, but in Ituri and North and South Kivu these are far below required levels, with surveillance described as “very, very, very weak” and case management as “catastrophic.” Governance and funding problems further slow work: the lead agency asked donors for $240m, including $74m, about 31%, for “co-ordination,” while a near-total May 23rd flight ban into Bunia led Ituri’s military governor to warn on May 26th that every wasted day brings disaster closer.
