US markets opened after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend to an overnight bond implosion in Japan and renewed threats from Donald Trump, including tariff hikes and fresh allusions to attacking American allies. Japan’s 40-year government bond yield hit a record, driven by fears that a snap election by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi could enable policies worsening the nation’s finances. Dealers described the session as the most chaotic in recent memory, with yields posting their biggest move since Trump announced his trade war on April 2.

The United States added its own turmoil. Greenland’s leader warned citizens to prepare for a possible US invasion. The 79-year-old president reportedly seeks to annex the island partly for “psychological” reasons and hinted in a late-night social media post at annexing Canada as well, despite a 1951 treaty already granting the US broad military access. A renewed “Sell America” trade followed: Treasuries fell, the dollar slid, and the S&P 500 dropped more than 2%, erasing the year’s gains in the steepest decline in over three months; the VIX reached its highest level since November; and gold surged above $4,700 an ounce, marking the worst US market day since Trump’s so-called liberation day.

Some in Europe are reassessing their exposure altogether. Denmark’s pension fund AkademikerPension said it will exit US Treasuries by the end of the month, citing Trump’s policies and the substantial credit risk posed by the US itself. Chief investment officer Anders Schelde warned that even if conditions calm in coming months and Trump cannot be reelected, uncertainty over the next five, six, or 10 years remains.
