Huang, age 62, is among Silicon Valley’s longest-serving CEOs, and Nvidia’s shares have risen roughly 842% over the past three years. The company was the first to reach a $4 trillion valuation and briefly exceeded $5 trillion. Despite exceptional performance, the board has offered little visibility into long-term leadership transition or an obvious heir.

Financial and operating metrics underscore Huang’s central role. Revenue has more than doubled in each of the past two fiscal years, and Wall Street expects annual sales to surpass $500 billion before the end of the decade. Nvidia is on track for net income of about $113 billion in the fiscal year ending this month, far exceeding the company’s pre-AI annual revenue. Huang remains the fifth-largest shareholder, and his influence over strategy, culture, and execution speed makes succession particularly challenging.

Management structure provides limited reassurance. Nvidia has four executive vice presidents, two in their 70s, one serving as general counsel, and one as chief financial officer in her late 50s, a background rarely chosen for tech CEOs. While senior technologists are respected, none are viewed as ready to assume broad strategic control. As valuation, profitability, and growth sit at historic highs, succession planning has been deferred, but the associated risk grows with the company’s scale.
