On June 16th, Xi Jinping met with Min Aung Hlaing during his first visit to Beijing as Myanmar's president, signifying political endorsement of the military junta's sham elections. Backed by conscription starting in 2024 that swelled army ranks past 100,000, the regime is advancing militarily and gaining international accommodation.

China remains Myanmar's largest foreign investor, seeking secure Indian Ocean access and control over vital trade routes. Together, China and Myanmar produce around 90% of the world's heavy rare earths, with nearly half of the global supply originating from mines controlled by the rebel Kachin Independence Army.

During the visit, officials discussed border trade, rare earths, and restarting the $3.6 billion Myitsone dam project that has been frozen since 2011. Additionally, China's geopolitical influence was highlighted by its June 3rd detention of prominent scholar Min Zin on espionage charges.
