Renewables are shining. The Iran war amplifies their appeal image

The context argues that while coal is often hailed as the major winner after the new Gulf war, clean energy—especially solar—may get an even larger boost if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Even before the U.S. and Israel began bombing Iran at the end of February, falling clean-energy costs had already undercut fossil fuels in many places.

In the IEA’s 20 April Global Energy Review, solar photovoltaics supplied more than 25% of worldwide new energy demand, compared with 17% for natural gas. In Ember’s 21 April report, 2025 renewable-electricity growth exceeded global electricity-demand growth for the first time, and renewables generated 34% of global electricity versus coal’s 33%, the first such lead in more than a century.

The increase was led by solar, whose generation rose 30% from 2,143 to 2,778 TWh, mostly from newly installed capacity, while wind rose from 2,510 to 2,715 TWh. Renewables including hydro, geothermal, and other technologies reached nearly 11,000 TWh (34%) last year with fossil fuels producing less than the previous year for only the fourth time this century, while solar’s levelized cost has fallen about 90% since 2010 to below coal in India even with battery storage, onshore wind is cheaper still, Germany’s early clean-energy investments after the 2022 Ukraine war saved about €25bn ($26bn) in gas imports, and last year’s new solar output surpassed the electricity from all LNG exported by the Gulf in 2025.
