With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, Ireland's tech sector is facing significant labor market disruption. The outsourcing company Covalen is cutting approximately 700 roles, while Meta plans to reduce its Irish workforce by 20%. These cuts highlight the heavy impact of AI technology on traditional roles, particularly in data annotation and content moderation that once supported AI model training.

As an economy heavily reliant on investments from US multinational tech giants, Ireland has over 6% of its workforce employed in the tech sector, making it more vulnerable to AI-related layoffs than other European countries. Government data reveals that ICT employment for those under 30 dropped sharply over the past two years, and Bloomberg Economics estimates that 30% of workers in Ireland will be meaningfully affected by AI.

Despite the wave of layoffs, the Irish government is actively positioning the country as a hub for AI development, with plans to host a summit in October to attract industry leaders like OpenAI. Meanwhile, emerging AI firms such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Klaviyo continue to recruit in Dublin, indicating that the market is seeking repositioning and growth in high-skilled AI roles amid the current transition.
