As temperatures rise again in the UK and western Europe, the impacts of climate change are already apparent, yet some politicians and media outlets are dismissing the need for climate action, exemplified by a Reform UK councilor's motion to scrap a climate emergency declaration being delayed because it was too hot to debate.
A study by World Weather Attribution scientists confirmed that Europe's June heatwave was unambiguously caused by fossil-fuel emissions, showing that similar heatwaves would have been 3.5C cooler in 1976 and 2C cooler in 2003. This highlights that adapting to climate change without reducing emissions is futile.
Furthermore, the concept of 'net zero' has been politicized and misunderstood as greenwashing, but it remains the scientific pathway to stopping climate change by reducing fossil-fuel use and permanently removing carbon, making any attempts to dilute the role of fossil fuels or weaponize net zero willfully ignorant.
