Contrary to dire warnings of an imminent technological employment collapse, the American labour market is experiencing an artificial-intelligence jobs boom. Non-farm payrolls expanded by 162,000 in August, holding the national unemployment rate at a historically low 4.1%, while youth unemployment margins hover near multi-decade lows. Although technology giants like Microsoft and Meta alongside software firms such as Intuit and Block trim headcount—averaging 16,000 AI-related layoffs monthly—these losses are absorbed within a dynamic labour market shedding 1.7m workers each month. The Economist estimates AI has generated roughly 1m American jobs since mid-2023, far eclipsing the 200,000 layoffs directly attributed to it.

Massive capital allocation toward physical compute infrastructure forms the primary growth engine. Goldman Sachs calculates that annual spending on hardware, data centres, cooling, and power generation has surged $500bn above 2022 levels. Data-centre construction outlays exceed $75bn annually, up nearly 60% year-on-year. This building spree has triggered intense competition for skilled blue-collar labour, adding 320,000 jobs above baseline trends across electrical contracting and equipment manufacturing. Indeed data reveals data-centre maintenance wages command a 40% premium over equivalent roles, while hourly earnings for electrical equipment manufacturing workers jumped 13% during the first half of 2026 amid acute shortages.

Simultaneously, the boom is creating high-skill white-collar professions while driving productivity-led demand expansion. LinkedIn records roughly 640,000 new AI-specific positions created between 2023 and 2025—including prompt engineers, data labellers, and forward-deployed engineers—with core data science and software roles adding 730,000 positions above baseline trends. Furthermore, lower legal and financial analysis costs have stimulated aggregate demand: paralegal employment grew 11% and market research analyst roles expanded 6%. While routine administrative assistants and customer support suffered 10–15% contractions, historical precedent suggests systemic technology shifts generate entire ecosystems of previously unimaginable occupations, rendering AI an emphatic net job creator.
