The outcome followed 15 years of AL authoritarian rule; the student-led August 2024 uprising that toppled the regime cost 1,400 lives, and an interim government then ran the country for 18 months under Muhammad Yunus. Despite the reform narrative, continuity risks are visible in the numbers: turnout was about 60%, Gen-Z protest forces won only six seats, and BNP’s own early-2000s tenure coincided with five consecutive years in which Bangladesh was ranked the world’s most corrupt by Transparency International.

Economic stress is equally numeric: Bangladesh exits least-developed-country status in November, losing trade and loan privileges while authorities pursue an estimated $16bn in assets smuggled abroad each year. The new finance agenda targets red-tape cuts, better business costs and procedures, and a rise from an abysmal 7% tax-to-GDP ratio, while ties with India enter renegotiation over water-sharing, border security, and legacy deals.
