Peter Magyar’s Tisza coalition won 52% versus Fidesz’s 40%, with rural eastern and southern regions also turning against Fidesz, while Our Homeland entered parliament with 6%.
In a three-hour speech Magyar promised to reverse the captured-state model by dismantling patronage networks, punishing corruption, and using a preliminary 137 of 199 parliamentary seats to force Fidesz-era officeholders—including the president, chief prosecutor, and court chiefs—to resign. He plans constitutional reform after public consultation, a two-term cap for prime ministers, and rollback of the “National Cooperation” system that placed crony control over universities, firms such as MOL, and pro-government media; the broadcaster’s full airing of his conference and the end of large state ad subsidies suggest the system is already unraveling.
The central task is unlocking about €18bn (about 10% of GDP) in blocked EU funds, much of which expires at the end of August and is conditioned on clear rule-of-law plans, with potential debt relief, a four-percentage-point narrowing in borrowing costs, and growth gains of at least one percentage point. If achieved, Hungary could pivot from a former Putin-aligned veto position toward EU cooperation, including support for the previously blocked €90bn Ukraine loan, while Orban stays in office only until May 12 and faces strong pressure to prosecute Fidesz-era enrichment.
