On Dec. 31, 2025, China rebuked Western criticism of what was described as its most intrusive Taiwan drills, calling Taiwan an “internal affair.” The UK said the two days of military activity, including rocket launches, raised cross-strait tensions and escalation risks; the EU urged restraint and opposed unilateral moves to change the status quo, and Taiwan thanked multiple partners for voicing concern.

The exercises appeared to be winding down without an official Chinese end notice, consistent with recent major drills that often last one or two days. Taiwan said Chinese ships crossed the line marking its 24‑nautical‑mile contiguous zone for the first time, and that PLA rockets also landed inside that boundary—an area tied to Taiwan’s enforcement of laws on taxes, immigration, and the environment. A Taiwanese Coast Guard official said Chinese Coast Guard vessels were slowly moving away, though monitoring continued.

Operational indicators also pointed to fading activity: Taiwan reported 35 aircraft entering sensitive areas in the 24 hours to early Wednesday, down from 90 in the prior period (‑55, about a 61% drop). The two-day snap drills followed U.S. approval of an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, one of the largest. Some flights to offshore outposts were disrupted, most international routes were not, and Taiwan’s stock market ended 2025 at a record. Trump downplayed the move, citing roughly 20 years of naval exercises, as both sides sought to keep an October trade truce in place for a year.
