In an underground headquarters run by Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, live kill-chain screens and data feeds support a strategy built to outpace Russian replacement rates by killing Russian infantry faster than Moscow can replenish them. Since Brovdi took over in summer, December became the first month where verified Russian losses from Ukrainian drones exceeded recruitment, and from the start of winter onward the gap reached at least 8,776 more Russian deaths or incapacitations, while even in its best thrust near Kostiantynivka Russia captured only 23% of its winter plan’s territorial goal.
His “Madyar’s birds” brigade claims responsibility for one-sixth of Russian losses, while the wider unmanned grouping he controls accounts for over one-third of losses, though it is only 2% of Ukraine’s total headcount. At the December peak, losses hit 388 a day—about one battalion’s assault component—while his units are ordered to target personnel at least 30% of the time; he presents a 400:1 kill-to-loss ratio, a 1% cumulative casualty rate, and a reported $878 materiel cost per kill as efficiency evidence.
The approach evolved from 2022 improvisations, when a few consumer drones were first used to send target coordinates via Discord and later FPV drones carrying MK-19 grenades were developed in Bakhmut. It now operates as an ecosystem of 15 interlocking functions running 3-5 km behind the front, and although stronger resourcing than previous commanders helps, Brovdi frames it as disciplined readiness—he says there is no immediate end to the war and the key is whether Ukraine can maintain tempo next year, especially as Russia added more than 100,000 personnel in the prior year.
