NASA's $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, heading toward an orbit roughly 1 million miles from Earth to begin a five- to 10-year deep-space observation mission.
Specifically designed to investigate dark matter, dark energy, and search for exoplanets, Roman features a field of view 100 times larger and mapping capabilities 1,000 times faster than Hubble, along with a coronagraph to block starlight for directly imaging faint exoplanets.
Conceived in the early 2010s, the mission overcame years of budget growth and multiple cancellation attempts before launch, with instrument deployment underway to begin science operations by late 2026 and deliver its first images in 2027.
