The context shows prepping has moved from a mocked, paranoid form of stockpiling to mainstream preparation. Chris Ellis says about 20 million Americans now fit the prepper category, up from 10 million in 2017, while survival-skills videos pull in millions of views and annual U.S. emergency-preparedness spending is thought to run into the billions, indicating a strong upward trend.
The bunker segment is also expanding, with industry estimates that the market could top $175m by 2030; Atlas Survival Shelters sells bunkers priced from $25,000 to $10m, says it has orders from more than 700 households, expects its sales volume to quadruple this year, and added a DIY parts line branded as a “Home Depot for survivalists,” while the Iran war reportedly helped demand.
Vivos is building, in South Dakota, a converted-shelter network marketed as “the largest survival community on Earth,” with 99-year leases requiring $55,000 upfront and about $1,100 annual ground rent, and almost 300 shelters claimed but delayed by construction backlogs. At the same time, a Vivos lease dispute has reached South Dakota’s Supreme Court and other customers have sued over promised amenities, while tariffs plus higher steel and oil costs are pushing bunker prices up, showing present-day constraints as well as demand growth.
