On the night of Dec 11–12, Russia launched a record 300 drones, bombs, and missiles at Odessa, leaving the region without electricity, water, or heat by morning. On Dec 18 a strike on the Mayaky bridge killed a mother and injured three children, and the next day attacks on nearby civilian port infrastructure killed eight more.

As Ukraine’s third-largest city, Odessa’s three deep-sea ports handled about 60% of all exports before the war, and after a 2023 Black Sea corridor reopened their share of reduced wartime exports rose to roughly 60–70%. The latest strikes cut available power from 12 megawatts needed for full capacity to 2, with operations constrained to alert-free hours and running at about 30–35% of demand, making delays and insurance limits more damaging.

Air-defence cover that once helped intercept missiles over the port is now largely absent; ballistic missiles from Crimea arrive in a little over 90 seconds, while cluster munitions and newer jet-powered drones and bombs expand risk for workers. Disinformation has produced only small protests—about a dozen people blocking a road after days without power—while repairs restored electricity at a record pace and Kyiv sent senior officials, replaced the local air-defence commander, and reiterated that keeping the city and ports running is central to national viability.
