The Israeli military spent weeks grading a wide new road to a hilltop in the occupied West Bank, and on March 17 a convoy of flat-bed trucks delivered temporary homes for settlers returning to Sa-Nur after more than two decades away. Four days later, two villages in the south showed a starkly different scene after a traffic incident in which an Israeli teen died, as settlers burned homes and cars, underscoring a broader competition for territory through force.
This is part of a wider campaign to expand settlements and tighten control over Palestinian land, with the conflict becoming more systematic and intense after the Iran war began on Feb. 28. Violence had already been rising after the Hamas attack on Gaza in Oct. 2023, when intimidation in remote rural areas became routine and progressively broader.
UN figures show more than 1,000 Palestinians killed in the West Bank by settlers or IDF soldiers since Oct. 2023, versus about 60 Israelis, a casualty ratio of roughly 16.7 to 1. At least 12 Palestinian civilians have been killed since late February, including the March 14 Tammun family shooting by undercover paramilitary police, while over 120 acres were seized for the Sa-Nur road and figures such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, with billions of shekels and over 100 new farms under his civil-affairs authority, keep the security and settlement apparatus aligned with annexation-level outcomes.
