A local couple needs to work ten years to buy a home compared to thirty years in Shanghai, attracting a population growth of approximately 30,000 people annually. However, the city is not immune to national economic woes; property prices have fallen by twenty-five percent in some areas, leaving an estimated one-third of recently built homes empty.

While declining local birth rates pose challenges, the city aims to reach a population of 6.5 million by 2035 through welcoming domestic migrants. To maintain order, authorities have implemented strict security measures, including designating sixty-six quiet zones and using surveillance systems that alert police to unregistered guests in hotel rooms.
