The Cold Supermoon of December 4, 2025 appears shortly after sunset and is the final full moon of the year, as well as the third consecutive supermoon. At roughly 357,000 km from Earth, it ranks as the year’s second-closest full moon, reaching full illumination about 12 hours after perigee. Its elliptic orbital range spans roughly 380,000 km at perigee to about 407,000 km at apogee, producing up to an 8 percent apparent size increase and about 16 percent greater brightness.

December’s full moon is the twelfth and the highest of 2025. Approaching the December 21 solstice, the Sun reaches its lowest altitude, placing the full moon at its highest. Occurring 17 days before the solstice, this cold supermoon is not the closest full moon to that date; the January 3, 2026 full moon, only 12 days after the solstice, will be the fourth and final consecutive supermoon.

The exact full moon moment falls at 6:14 pm ET on December 4, 2025. Although it appears nearly full the nights before and after, moonrise offers the strongest lunar illusion, whose mechanism remains unexplained. With clear weather and an unobstructed eastern horizon, an elevated site enables observation of the year’s final lunar display.
