Feted by Europe’s left, Spain’s Pedro Sánchez is unloved at home image

Sánchez used a March 4 television appearance to restate his opposition to America’s attack on Iran and, after granting amnesty in January to perhaps 800,000 undocumented migrants, cast Spain as Europe’s leading opponent of Trumpian nationalism. His stance is backed by an economy that has grown twice as fast as the euro-area average since 2023 and expanded by 2.8% last year.

Even while sounding dovish, Sánchez has raised defence spending by over 40% since 2024 to 2% of GDP, though still below NATO’s 3.5% target. At the same time, after almost eight years in office, his coalition no longer has a reliable majority, and the Socialists were heavily defeated in the regional elections in Extremadura in December and Aragón last month.

Polls suggest Spain has been shifting rightward: rising housing costs have offset wage gains, majorities in some recent surveys now think immigration is too high, and the populist-right Vox won over 17% in both Extremadura and Aragón. Sánchez wants to re-energise left-wing voters before a general election that must be held by July 2027, but analysts warn that the political cycle may be ending, with the unusual prospect of the PP needing to govern alongside Vox.
