In north-western Nigeria, gunmen abducted almost half of the roughly 600 students and staff at St Mary’s high school in Kwnа village on November 21st, making it the third major kidnapping in a single week. Three days earlier, two people were killed and 38 abducted in a church attack in neighbouring Kwara state, and by December 8th only about 100 children had been released while another 165 captives remained missing, in a kidnapping that surpassed the infamous 2014 Chibok abductions in scale.

President Bola Tinubu faces intense international pressure, including an October 31st threat by Donald Trump of possible U.S. military intervention and Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern,” which could trigger sanctions and aid cuts. Despite appointing a new defence minister on December 2nd and ordering crackdowns, analysts argue that the state still fails to control much of its roughly one million square kilometres of territory, with violence shifting rather than clearly declining.

The government claims that since Tinubu took office in 2023 security forces have killed about 13,500 “terrorists” and arrested 17,000 more, while Beacon Security and Intelligence estimates that in the 12 months to October conflict-related abductions and fatalities actually fell slightly even as overall violence spiked. Yet Amnesty International reports roughly 10,000 people killed and many more abducted in just the first two years of his term, as kidnapping-for-ransom by criminal bandits remains widespread, prompting pledges for more federal and state-level police and expanded security partnerships with the United States, France, Russia, and other allies.
