A new cohort of young Chinese billionaires is rapidly emerging with business models and management styles that contrast sharply with those of earlier real estate and internet moguls. According to Hurun, China hosts at least 30 self-made billionaires aged 40 or under, including DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng. With DeepSeek’s valuation reaching $71bn in its latest funding round, Mr Liang’s personal net worth has surged to approximately $38bn, eclipsing the fortunes of American AI founders. Over two-thirds of these young tycoons built their wealth in consumer goods, gaming (such as miHoYo co-founder Liu Wei), and beverages (such as Chagee founder Zhang Junjie), alongside Pop Mart founder Wang Ning.

Unlike traditional Chinese entrepreneurs who took decades to expand internationally, this new generation operates with rapid global reach. Chagee opened its first international milk-tea shop just two years after its 2017 founding and now operates across nine countries. Consumer-electronics firm Dreame generates roughly 80% of its sales overseas, while Pop Mart earned over $2bn in international revenue last year, representing 40% of its total sales. This aggressive foreign expansion reflects both domestic consumer market saturation and a heightened capacity to compete in global consumer sectors.

Management practices and public profiles among these young founders reflect a deliberate shift toward corporate low-profile strategies. Many have repudiated the intense "996" work culture advocated by tech pioneers like Jack Ma, favoring flexible work hours and burnout prevention. Amid regulatory tightening across tech and real estate—which saw Nongfu Spring founder Zhong Shanshan’s fortune fall from near $100bn to $39bn and Jack Ma lose 80% of his peak wealth—as well as heightened US-China geopolitical tensions, these young founders consistently avoid press interviews. This reticence has produced a generation of entrepreneurs that is simultaneously China's most globally integrated and its most enigmatic.
