Sharma Oli。
Nepal’s 35-year-old Balendra Shah, known as Balen, won a landslide victory in the March 5, 2026 election and will become the country’s youngest prime minister. In the Jhapa-5 constituency he defeated 74-year-old four-time former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli by roughly a 7-to-2 vote ratio. His party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party, secured 183 of the 275 seats in the lower house, just one short of a supermajority. The result capped a youth-driven political upheaval following protests in 2025 in which 77 people were killed, ultimately forcing the government to resign and hold early elections.
Nepal’s politics had long been dominated by three major parties, while economic opportunities remained limited. Youth unemployment has hovered around 20%, the national median age is only 26, and millions of young Nepalis have emigrated for work. Widespread frustration enabled a new anti-corruption political movement to gain support. Balen built credibility as mayor of Kathmandu from 2022, addressing sanitation problems and removing illegal businesses from central districts. After joining the four-year-old RSP, he attracted support across generations.
Balen has proposed ambitious economic targets, including creating 1.2m jobs and doubling GDP per person to $3,000 within five years, while transforming Nepal from a buffer state between India and China into a “bridge”. However, his overwhelming victory also carries risks. Holding 183 parliamentary seats grants significant power while raising expectations in a struggling country. Failure to deliver anti-corruption reforms and employment could quickly erode support. His governing style—often communicating through social media rather than the press and previously enforcing policies aggressively—may also generate controversy during his administration.
