Enthusiasm for Viktor Orban’s April 12 election bid in Transcarpathia is split, from a visibly drunk man in Syurte who calls him a hero to an ethnic Hungarian café patron in Uzhhorod who has stopped watching Hungarian TV, saying she is tired of his anti-Ukrainian messaging. The same diaspora does not vote as a single bloc, showing local identity has not translated into one political line.
Orban’s overseas base remains strong: in Hungary’s 2022 election, more than 90% of votes cast abroad went to Fidesz. Since 2010, his government has spent hundreds of millions of euros on schools, pensions, and cultural centers and handed out over 1 million passports abroad, which helps explain why his appeal endures in Transcarpathia despite growing friction from anti-Ukraine rhetoric.
The region is also shrinking under war pressure, with more than 220 local conscripts memorialized in Uzhhorod and, from roughly 120,000 Hungarians who lived there before the invasion, less than half still remaining. Empty homes in Syurte, rare Hungarian on the streets, the Szijjarto-Putin episode and pipeline accusations, plus Orban’s block on €90bn in EU loans and Kyiv’s retaliatory claims, show the communities are being trapped in an escalating Ukraine-Hungary diplomatic conflict.
