On December 14, gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, killing 15 people in the deadliest terrorist attack in Australian history; Alex Kleytman, 87, was the oldest victim, and Matilda, 10, the youngest named. Authorities say the attackers were Sajid Akram, 50, killed at the scene, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, who was arrested, hospitalised, and charged with 59 offences after explosives and two Islamic State flags were found in his car.

ASIO investigated Naveed Akram in 2019 and interviewed his father, but said it found no evidence of radicalisation then, implying a later sharp shift in his risk profile. In November the pair spent four weeks in the Philippines, returned about a fortnight before the attack, travelled to Davao City in Mindanao, and police say Sajid—originally from Telangana, India—moved to Australia in 1998.

Jewish leaders cite a statistical surge in antisemitism, with more antisemitic attacks in the past two years than in the whole preceding decade and positive attitudes toward Jews falling from 38% in 2023 to 29% this year. Policy responses stress both hate speech and firearms: after a 1996 rampage that killed 35 people, only about 12% of Australian killings involved a firearm in the year to June 2024 versus about 80% in America in 2023, yet one attacker legally owned six guns amid roughly a million more civilian guns than before 1996, while a fundraiser for a 43-year-old bystander who disarmed the gunman raised over A$2.5m ($1.65m).
