China’s remote-sensing expansion is sharply quantitative: it launched more than 120 satellites in 2025 and now has over 640 in orbit, second only to the United States, while the Jilin-1 constellation exceeds one hundred satellites and claims Earth-wide imaging roughly every ten minutes. In this architecture, China’s private-sector market is tightly linked to the state, Chinese firms match U.S. commercial sharpness in many products, and China is on par or ahead in revisit rate and some “forward-looking” capabilities.
The contest is now about operational availability, not just image resolution: sanctions against firms like CGST for Wagner and Houthi-related sales have had limited effect, while Spacety still raised $190m from state-linked funds and venture capital. Two Chinese constellations with video capability, Jilin-1 and Zhuhai-1, challenge the U.S. lead, yet U.S. analysts and journalists remain wary because increased data volume is creating more surveillance capability for both defense transparency and strategic exploitation.
